4 Fun Action Movies Most Could Enjoy

By Tuesday, March 29, 2016 ,

I recently posted about a few chick flicks that most people could enjoy, so I figured I should even the score and talk about action movies. Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t think that tons of fire and blood automatically make an action movie good. Kind of like how a giggly, romantic scene every five minutes doesn’t instantly make a good chick flick, you know?

So, that said, if you’re looking for your next as-many-explosions-as-possible recommendation, this post probably isn’t for you. As someone who doesn’t naturally go for a lot of explosions, I tried to come up with a good middle-of-the-road list. And I’m going to risk sounding rather old-fashioned, as most of these suggestions are older movies. But with the stuff coming out these days, I think sticking with the old stuff is often a good choice. And a bit oddly, most of these suggestions are the first installment of a series as well. Not sure what that says about me, except perhaps that I favor originals? You decide.

X-Men
Surprise! Maybe I do have a superhero nerdy streak after all. Just a sliver, perhaps. I remember being honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed this first film in the X-Men series though. I’m not a science fiction or Marvel gal at all, but this movie is fun, suspenseful, and engaging. The plot is strong and I loved all the unexpected twists! And the characters, while other-worldly, are still very relatable and interesting. Plus, Hugh Jackman. So there’s that. I’ve not seen any of the other movies in this series, and I honestly kind of want to keep it that way…apologies upfront to any aficionados.

The Italian Job
The interesting thing about this movie is that in real life, none of the characters would be the “good guys” because they’re all thieves. Psych! So I find it fun that this film can make a bunch of robbers into sympathetic characters by portraying them as extremely clever and resourceful. But seriously, it does make you realize how much work it takes to be a successful thief. And the car chases and computer hacking jobs are pretty epic.

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Who doesn’t love some Indy Jones? Pretty sure Harrison Ford was my first real celebrity crush as a preteen because of this movie. I love the intrigue, the mysteries, and the constant running from Nazis and spies. Indy and Marion’s fight in the Cairo marketplace and their escape from the exploding plane are among my favorite scenes. And of course there are numerous excellent history lessons throughout, which is always a plus :) Once again, Raiders is the only Indy movie to which I have special loyalty. I’ve seen The Last Crusade, but nothing could top Raiders for me!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
My favorite saved for last. A sprawling, epic adventure romp fraught with pirates, cursed treasure, swordfights, cannon battles, and fun piratey banter. This movie was all the rage when it first appeared, and though there are now four (Or five? Goodness only knows why they’re still making them) Pirates of the Caribbean movies, most agree that Curse of the Black Pearl remains the best. It’s a high-action, straightforward adventure with great characters, laugh-out-loud humor, and suspenseful twists. Johnny Depp’s career-defining role of Jack Sparrow – pardon me, Captain Jack Sparrow – remains one of my favorite characters of his making. I can only hope to be half as in-your-face witty as he is at some point in my life. This movie also might have been what sealed my girl-crush on Keira Knightley. I enjoyed the second and third Pirates installments, but Black Pearl will always be my favorite!
